“How did you meet?”

Posted by Jason Cortlund

“There’s a true cineaste subculture within the Austin filmmaking community. Filmmakers who also program screenings and/or write about film. Omnivorous lovers of cinema in all forms and flavors.

The three of us met during graduate school at the University of Texas—but our bond comes out of Austin’s glorious film gutter, where everything washes together. We’ve held boom poles and dressed sets for one another. We helped run a festival called Cinematexas (founded by Athina Rachel Tsangari) for several years. We’ve watched each other’s films in various stages and shared creative feedback, technical knowledge, and strategic advice for navigating festivals and distribution.

For the last few years, we’ve discussed collaborating on a small Texas-based feature. This past spring, the right story and our respective schedules converged”.
