The day-by-day diary of the first workshop

DAY 1, Oct 5
The first workshop of 2013/14 Biennale College – Cinema has begun! We had the presentation of the projects and the introduction of teams and staff today.

DAY 2, Oct 6
Teams are discussing their projects in their groups with all the experts and tutors. This afternoon producers are meeting their producer consultant and directors are meeting their script consultant. Out team:

- Group Leaders: Michel Reilhac, Gino Ventriglia and Amy Dotson;
- Producer Consultants: Mike S. Ryan, Tristan Goligher and Vincent Wang;
- Script Consultants: Marietta Von Hauswolf von Baumgarten, Anita Voorham and Giacomo Durzi.

DAY 3, Oct 7
Restless City will be the subject of the case study of film this evening. Katie Mustard, producer of the movie, will hold the lecture. Directed by Andrew Dosunmu, “Restless City” is the story of an African immigrant surviving on the fringes of New York City where music is his passion, life is a hustle and falling in love is his greatest risk. It premiered at Sundance in 2011.

DAY 4, Oct 8
Meetings between teams and tutors continue. During the afternoon, all the producers have meetings with Wang, Ryan and Goligher on rising production finance, while directors can see any group leader or script consultant from other groups on request to have further and different feedback. Finally, this evening Michel Reilhac is helding a presentation on Transmedia.

DAY 5, Oct 9
Producers of each team are meeting Katie Mustard for a 50′ consultancy. But overall today is a free day for almost everyone. In fact, teams have to finish writing their step outlines, to be submitted at midnight. Tutors will give theit feedback tomorrow.

DAY 6, Oct 10
Paul Tyler is holding his workshop on visualization to help teams to build their projects. Teams are also receiving feedback from tutors on their step outlines, which they submitted yesterday. Finally this evening we have the screening of Andrew Haigh’s Weekend, produced by Tristan Goligher, one of our Producer Consultants. Case study on the film tomorrow.

DAY 7, Oct 11
Each team received feedback from group leaders, script consultants and producer consultants on their step outline this morning. Producers Tristan Goligher and Mike S. Ryan are sharing the production and financing aspects of some of their movies with the teams during two case studies for all participants this afternoon: Weekend, which was screened yesterday, by Goligher; Liberty Kid and Between Us by Ryan. Finally, screening of one of Tsai Ming-liang’s masterpieces this evening: Goodbye, Dragon Inn, produced by Vincent Wang. Case study of film tomorrow.

DAY 8, Oct 12
Production and financing case study on Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn, which was screened yesterday, held by producer Vincent Wang. Today Paul Tyler continues his visualization workshop with the teams, while some participants are meeting Stefano Tealdi, our pitching trainer, to prepare their pitch for Monday, October 14th, day of the official presentation of the 12 selected projects at La Biennale di Venezia. Finally, Mathilde Henrot, our Distribution Expert from Festival Scope will hold a presentation os sales and distribution.

DAY 9, Oct 13
Time to wrap up! Each team ends its work together with its group leader, script consultant and producer consultant. Then it’s also time to finalize the pitch. Tomorrow the 12 teams will present their projects from 3pm to 6pm at La Biennale di Venezia, Ca’ Giustinian – San Marco 1364/a (Sala delle Colonne, 1st floor), Venice.
