Ben Joseph Andrews is an XR artist based on Wathaurong country in regional Australia.
Collaborating with Emma Roberts, his work often integrates VR within multi-modal installations and performances to create collective experiences ranging from the transcendent to the ecstatic. Their projects have been exhibited at Sundance, SXSW, IDFA, CPH:DOX, Sheffield Doc/Fest and MIT, among others.
Recently, the pair created Turbulence: Jamais Vu – the first chapter of a four-part docsessay series – which won the DocLab prize for Immersive at IDFA 2023; the Turbulence project was also awarded Best Pitch at IDFA’s DocLab Forum.
Andrews has spoken and lectured at NYU Tisch, MIT Open Documentary Lab, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Facebook, Sheffield Doc/Fest, and University College London. His interest in the visceral and bodily affects of XR is supported by a practice-led PhD at the University of Melbourne, exploring the emergent framework of sensory experience and composition in virtual immersion.
