Born as Ma Nan in Shanghai, China, Johnny immigrated to Toronto at the age of ten. His feature debut OLD STONE premiered at the 2016 Berlinale. It was awarded the Best Canadian First Feature Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and also the Canadian Screen Awards. John is an alumni of the Sundance Screenwriting/Direcitng Labs.
