The 12 teams formed of directors and producers selected by Alberto Barbera, together with the Biennale College – Cinema team, have been invited to attend a first ten-days workshop, which started on October 5th in Venice, at the Centro Soggiorno e Studi of San Servolo island. The teams are working with an Academic Team formed of international and italian professionals and experts. The purpose is to discuss all aspects of the projects and share experiences about low budget filmmaking, giving and receiving feedback directly from tutors and other teams.
Depending on their role, tutors and consultants (you can find their bios in the Team section) have specific tasks, and they work in different ways with directors, producers or teams:
- 3 Group Leaders: Michel Reilhac, Gino Ventriglia and Amy Dotson
They are working with 4 projects each, mainly with the directors, but often with the teams. Each group is discussing in detail all aspects of their project, giving and receiving feedback from the other teams, and pulling together all different inputs they are receiving during the other sessions.
- 3 Producers Consultants: Tristan Goligher, Mike Ryan and Vicent Wang
Each is working with a group of 4 producers, and sometimes together with all 12 producers. They are discussing the production aspects of each project with the teams, making use of all the knowledge that is in the group to share experiences and best practices in the field of micro-budget cinema.
- 3 Script Consultants: Giacomo Durzi, Anita Voorham and Marietta von Hauswolff von Baumgarten
Each is working on 4 projects. Every team has 2 one-to-one sessions of half an hour with the script consultant to discuss the script.

Directors and producers will have time to meet group leaders, script consultants and producers consultants of the other 2 groups to have further feedback. And all the teams will have also extra feedback and help thanks to 3 Experts and 1 pitching trainer:
- 3 Experts: Mathilde Henrot, Katie Mustard and Paul Tyler
Each is doing a different job concerning the area they are experts in. Mathilde Henrot, our Distribution Expert, helds a presentation on sales and a consultancy with each teams about the distribution aspects. Katie Mustard helds a lecture focused on a case study of a film, and every producer will have a 50′ sessions of consultancy with her to discuss the production aspects. Paul has a particular workshop with each team, aiming to build their project in the best way.
- 1 Pitching Trainer: Stefano Tealdi
In groups and one-to one sessions, the teams are receiving help in presenting their project in public by learning to describe the core of the project.
Finally, during the workshop Tristan Goligher and Vincent Wang will screen and discuss a movie they produced (Weekend and Goodbye Dragon Inn), and Michel Reilhac will held a presentation on Transmedia.
The first workshop will conclude on October 13th. On October 14th every project will be presented at Biennale.
