Matthijs Vuijk (1995, NL) is a director, artist, and cinematographer with a diverse background in photography, film, and virtual reality. After studying photography at the Royal Academy of the Arts (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium, he pursued a Bachelor Honours in Film & Television at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Matthijs’ collaborative graduation film, Sikelela Tapes (2020), was selected for the prestigious International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Through various media, he explores the emotional influence of time, politics, and socio-cultural changes by depicting the subjective experience. In his attempt to understand how large societal change processes slowly trickle down to smaller, more isolated communities. He is actively engaged in various cultural initiatives in both Amsterdam and Johannesburg, as well as finishing his debut mid-length documentary.
