Jake Perlin is a producer, film programmer, film distributor and book publisher. Over the last decade, he has worked in various production capacities on both documentary and narrative features and shorts. He was the Founding Artistic Director of Metrograph cinema, Curator-at-Large for Film at Lincoln Center and Associate Curator at BAMCinématek, programming hundreds of series and thousands of films. He has twice won the Film Heritage Award from the National Society of Film Critics for his programming. Perlin is the founder of The Film Desk, a distribution company dedicated to releasing under seen masterpieces of international cinema, previously unavailable in North America, including films by Philippe Garrel, Susan Sontag, Alain Cavalier, Jacques Rivette and Andrei Ujica. Perlin is responsible for the rediscovery of Bill Gunn’s Personal Problems, and co-curated the exhibition Til They Listen: Bill Gunn Directs America, with Hilton Als and Artists Space. He is the Creative Director of Cinema Conservancy, a non-profit, which has supported preservation work for filmmakers including Michael Roemer and Stephanie Rothman, and most recently, the film James Baldwin: From Another Place, directed by Sedat Pakay. Perlin’s publishing company, Film Desk Books, recently released a new edition of Film as a Subversive Art by Amos Vogel and the first english translation of Duras/Godard Dialogues. Perlin also edited the new collection Do Not Detonate Without Presidential Approval: Inspirations for Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City”, published in 2023 by Pushkin Press.
In 2018, Perlin is a Chevalier des Ordres et les Lettres, and in 2022 was given a special award from the
New York Film Critics Circle for his “indispensable contributions to film culture”.
